The Viagra® Medication (Sidenafil) and Warfarin

The Viagra® medication, or sildenafil, has been around for more than 15 years and yet there can be a certain stigma around talking about it. This is especially true if you are the one who it has been prescribed to by your doctor. While sildenafil can be used to manage pulmonary hypertension, it is more commonly used to help men with erectile dysfunction.1,2

According to the package insert, the Viagra® medication can have an increased incidence of bleeding.2 Sidenafil and warfarin are listed as a moderate risk for interaction and in some cases can result in a higher risk of bleeding.3 The dose of warfarin you are taking could possibly need some adjustments which also might result in the need to retest your INR (International Normalized Ratio) more frequently.1 Any signs or symptoms of bruising or bleeding should always be reported to your health care professional immediately.

New medications and warfarin

For those who take warfarin, it is important to always notify your doctor or other health care professional managing your warfarin dosing of any new medications before you start them. It may seem like a minor thing to overlook, but it is important to communicate these changes. Your health care professional can guide you to safely start and stop new or current medications while on warfarin.

Talk to your doctor or other health care provider that manages your warfarin dosing about all medications. Discussing that you are starting a Viagra® prescription may be a little uncomfortable however it is always the right thing to do.
