Marketed by Bayer, Yaz contraceptive protects women against pregnancy but increases their risk of stroke and heart attack

Yaz® (drospirenone & ethinyl estradiol) is a birth control choice for women offering 99% pregnancy prevention and the only birth control proven to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a condition with emotional and physical premenstrual symptoms severe enough to impact your life. PMDD symptoms can include:

  • Anger
  • Irritability
  • Markedly depressed moods
  • Feeling anxious
  • Bloating
  • Change in appetite
  • Headaches
  • Muscle aches 1
  • Yaz® is however associated with an increased risk of stroke and heart attack through increased risk of blood clot development. Women over 35 and those who smoke are at further increased risk.1 If you are considering Yaz® or any oral contraceptive, you should discuss the benefit/risk before making this important choice.

If you are taking warfarin (Coumadin ®) (Coumadin®2) and begin birth control medications such as Yaz®, improving your control of warfarin will decrease your risk of warfarin-related side effects. Home INR Testing allows you to test at home weekly to help manage interactions with other medications.

Home INR Testing is a covered by Medicare3 and by most private insurance. To start testing at home, physician prescription is required and is complimentary to your routine medical care.
